He and Faraji were arrested on 17 May near Balad (70 km north of Baghdad) by the Iraqi army, which handed them over to the coalition forces. The US army then asked the FBI to investigate them. The FBI finally concluded on 4 July that it had nothing on them.—————————————————————-28.06.05 Iraq TV producer killed and a documentary maker and a cameramen arrested Reporters Without Borders has called for information about the arrest of a documentary-maker and of his cameraman, of whom there has been no news since early May, and the murder of a local TV producer shot dead at the wheel of his car on 28 June.Cyrus Kar, a US national of Iranian origin and his Iranian cameraman Farshid Faraji, were both arrested in Iraq on 2 May 2005 while making a documentary entitled, “In search of Darius the Great”. Ahmed Wael Al Bacri, producer on local al-Charkiya television died at the wheel of his car while he was returning to his home in Baghdad.”We ask for light to be shed on the circumstances of the arrest of documentary-maker Cyrus Kar and his cameraman Farshid Faraji. The US and Iraqi authorities should quickly investigate to find out the reasons for their detention,” the organisation said, adding, “We are particularly worried Faraji about whom we have had no news since his arrest on 2 May. “We have found out that Kar was seen in a US Army vehicle. It is not the first time that US forces have arbitrarily detained journalists in Iraq. The extremely sensitive context in the country does not justify this detention and it is important the US forces continue to respect the work of journalists.””We demand the full truth about this case and the murder of Ahmed Wael Al Bacr. We ask the competent authorities to take all necessary steps to investigate the circumstances of his death. Iraqi journalists are frequently the target of attacks and pay a high price for reporting the news,” the organisation added. to go furtherlast_img read more

Governor says mayors cannot issue ‘stay home’ orders

August 13, 2020

first_imgJOHNSTON — Governor Kim Reynolds says it appears city and county officials in Iowa do not have the authority to issue local “shelter in place” orders.Linn County officials have been discussing the move and Iowa City’s mayor has asked the governor to issue either a statewide or regional “stay home” order. Iowa City is in Johnson County, the epicenter of the COVID outbreak in Iowa, where 49 cases of the virus have been confirmed. The governor Thursday said she’s asked officials in Johnson and Linn Counties to consider all the angles.“Like the social distancing and some of the policies that we’ve put in place — Are we communicating those in a manner that we should? Are there additional measures that should be taken?” Reynolds said during her daily news conference. “We need to look at the (personal protective equipment) and the workforce capacity and how that is impacted in what we’re doing.”Iowa City’s mayor has declared a civil emergency in his community. Reynolds indicated her staff consulted the attorney general and determined cities and counties do not have the authority to order citizens to stay at home.“We’re reaching to communities on a daily level to walk through the metrics that we’re using,” Reynolds said, “to talk them through why we don’t think it’s necessary to issue a ‘shelter in place’ at this point.”Reynolds has expanded the list of businesses that must close to include flower shops, furniture stores and retailers that sell shoes and clothes. Her closure order does not apply to grocery stores, pharmacies and discount stores that sell clothing, furniture and flowers as well as groceries, toilet paper, and other daily necessities.last_img read more

Smith can beat Groves, says DeGale

December 21, 2019

first_imgJames DeGale believes arch rival George Groves could come unstuck against Paul Smith.Liverpudlian Smith will challenge the unbeaten Groves for his British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles on 5 November. It will be Groves’ first fight since his split-decision victory over fellow West Londoner DeGale, who last year dethroned Smith as British champion by stopping him in the ninth round. That one-sided defeat to the Harlesden man is one of the reasons Smith will be the underdog when we takes on Groves at Wembley Arena. But DeGale told West London Sport: “That fight aint a forgone conclusion, please believe me. Paul Smith is a seasoned professional who’s been there and done it.Groves took DeGale’s British title when they met in May“When Groves fought me he knew that if he mixed it he’d get knocked out. If he mixes it with Smith and gets hit on his chin he’ll be gone – everyone knows about Groves’ chin.“You have to go on form and past results and say that Groves is the favourite. But if Smith connects cleanly on him, he’ll get knocked out.”DeGale, 25, will get his first outing since the Groves loss when he faces European champion Piotr Wilczewski at the Liverpool Echo Arena on 15 October.A win against the Pole, who has lost only one of his 30 fights, would put DeGale in the frame for a world title shot or a rematch with Groves.“I want to get that European title and then move on and get a world title as soon as I can – I’m raring to go,” DeGale added.“Groves says he wants to move on to bigger and better things, yet he’s fighting a guy I stopped in nine rounds.” read more

Ohio Hunters Harvest more than 12,500 Deer during Ohio’s Muzzleloader Season

December 18, 2019

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Hunters checked 12,505 white-tailed deer during Ohio’s muzzleloader season, Jan. 9-12, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). During last year’s muzzleloader season 13,724 white-tailed deer were checked.Hunters still have opportunities to pursue deer this winter, as archery season remains open through Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016.The ODNR Division of Wildlife remains committed to properly managing Ohio’s deer populations. The goal of Ohio’s Deer Management Program is to provide a deer population that maximizes recreational opportunities, while minimizing conflicts with landowners and motorists.Until recently, deer populations in nearly all of Ohio’s counties were well above goal. In the last few years, through increased antlerless harvests, most counties are now at or near goal. Therefore, to help stabilize deer populations, bag limits were reduced, and antlerless permit use has been eliminated in most counties for the 2015-2016 season. The ODNR Division of Wildlife is in the process of revising Ohio’s population goals and is asking hunters that receive the survey to help by completing and returning their survey as soon as possible. Hunters for this year’s survey were randomly selected from the list of hunters who purchased a license and deer permit by Nov. 16. Landowner surveys have already been completed, and hunter surveys were mailed early in December. Public input is an important part of Ohio’s deer management program, and survey participants are asked to complete and return their surveys to ensure that hunters have a clear voice in helping to decide the direction of deer management in Ohio.last_img read more

Doping: SAI hits out at sacked Ukrainian coach Yori, says all deals cleared

November 28, 2019

first_imgAfter sacked Ukrainian coach Yuri Ogorodnik’s outburst against the Sports Authority of India for the alleged sub-standard facilities at NIS, Patiala, the sports body has now hit out at the former, dismissing all his allegations as baseless. Speaking exclusively to Headlines Today, SAI director General Deepak Verma insisted that Yuri was not held captive as claimed. “The allegations levelled against SAI is absolutely baseless. We have cleared all deals. We have not held him captive. He is free to go anywhere,” Verma told Headlines Today. Yuri had been sacked by SAI after six of his eight wards had failed dope tests bringing shame to the country. The 79 year-old coach has claimed innocence, while accusing the SAI of mistreating him despite his poor health conditions.  Earlier, Yuri had said his life was under threat and that he did not want to die. The Ukranian had earlier blamed food supplements after six of his athletes flunked dope tests. He had also denied any role in the doping scandal and insisted that it was a set-up and an attempt to tarnish his reputation. Sini Jose, Ashwini Akkunji, Mandeep Kaur, Juana Murmu, Tiana Mary Thomas and Priyanka Pawar – who were being coached by Ogorodnik – have tested positive for methandienone.  Sini, Ashwini and Mandeep were a part of the 4x400m relay team that won the gold at last year’s Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Ashwini had also won the gold in the 400m hurdles at the Asian Games.  The athletes had also blamed the food supplements recommended by Ogorodnik for failing their dope tests.advertisementlast_img read more

Schumacher conscious after undergoing stem cell therapy

October 18, 2019

first_imgParis: The stricken seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher has undergone cell therapy surgery in Paris’ Georges-Pompidou hospital and is now “conscious”, according to French daily Le Parisien. According to the daily, Schumacher was in the cardiovascular department overseen by surgeon Philippe Menasche, described as a ‘pioneer in cell surgery against heart failure’. The German received stem cells to obtain an anti-inflammatory effect throughout his system, Le Parisien suggested. Also Read – Puducherry on top after 8-wkt win over ChandigarhWhile there has been no official statement from Schumacher’s entourage, Le Parisien quoted an unnamed nurse at the hospital regarding the Formule One legend’s situation. “Yes he is in my service,” the nurse was quoted as saying. “And I can assure you that he is conscious.” The athlete was struck down by a skiing accident that snapped his helmet in December 2013 and little information on his condition has been made public since then. He was placed in a medically-induced coma for six months after the fall and was moved from Grenoble hospital to Lausanne before being returned home in September 2014 where he receives private treatment. It has been suggested by old friends he is unable to walk or properly communicate. Schumacher won his first world title 25 years ago and had won his first Grand Prix back in 1992. His glory years were spent at Benetton and Ferrari, for whom he won the last of his 91 Grand Prix victories in China in 2006.last_img read more
