Jintai Village is located near Guangyuan, Sichuan Province — one of the places hardest hit by the May 12th Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008. The disaster left nearly 5 million people homeless and it is estimated that 80% of all buildings in the affected area were destroyed. Major reconstruction efforts have taken place. However, in July 2011, after heavy rainfall and landslides in the region around Jintai Village, many of newly rebuilt homes and some in process were once again destroyed. Despite this tragic event, locals were left without further donations or aid. With support from the local government and NGOs, this project demonstrates a socially and environmentally sustainable model for earthquake reconstruction while examining the many nuances of reconstructing a community.Save this picture!via Rural Urban FrameworkSave this picture!House Section DiagramSave this picture!via Rural Urban FrameworkA total of twenty-two houses were rebuilt including a community center. The design strategy provides four different types of houses, differing in size, function and their roof sections. These demonstrate new uses of local materials, a green stepped-roof, biogas technologies, and accommodation for pigs and chickens. A vertical courtyard increases light and ventilation and channels rainwater for collection. The design also invests in reed bed waste-water treatment and collective animal rearing. By relating various programs of the village to an ecological cycle, environment responsiveness is heightened, transforming the village into a model for nearby areas.Save this picture!via Rural Urban FrameworkSave this picture!MasterplanBecause the land available for house building is limited, the village combines dense urban living in a rural context. The rooftops support individual household farming, whereas open spaces on the ground level allow for individual family-owned workshops. The design of the village preserves the ideal of the common good, and proposes a rethinking of the modern rural landscape.Save this picture!via Rural Urban FrameworkSave this picture!via Rural Urban FrameworkThis is an investigation into modern rural livelihood. With tens of thousands of newly planned villages occurring in China today, the challenge is to plan villages as authentic places whereby the spatial organization and physical expression is derived directly from its relationship to its natural environment.Save this picture!via Rural Urban FrameworkProject gallerySee allShow lessMaison De La Culture / Atelier 56SSelected ProjectsRural Hotel / Rómulo NetoSelected ProjectsProject locationAddress:Nanjiang, Bazhong, Sichuan, ChinaLocation to be used only as a reference. Dad finds way to block Facebook

September 27, 2020

first_imgStuff.co.nz 1 Sep 2012Hyde’s 13-year-old daughter goes to log into Facebook and, wham! She gets a yellow-and-black screen instead. She’s been blocked, Face Block-ed.Hyde, a Nelson software designer, has created an application that lets people block Facebook in their homes for an hour, with the press of a button.“She hates it,” Hyde said.Face Block was among the business ideas put to New Zealand entrepreneur and technology guru Rod Drury during a public event in Nelson a couple of weeks ago.Hyde, who is hoping to have the application available to the public by Christmas, said the more he talked to other parents about reducing their children’s Facebook use, “the more extreme solutions I started to hear”.These included unplugging the router and locking it in the car and changing their wi-fi passwords on a daily basis, “like you might do at a motel or campsite”.“This is an easier way,” he said.Face Block disables people’s Facebook access for an hour, and then it comes back on.“You don’t have to do anything else. They will squeal for a few seconds and get on with their homework and then later in the day they can go back on Facebook – and if they abuse it, it can go off again.”Hyde developed the software because he was sick of his daughter rushing through her meal to get back on to Facebook, or being on the social networking site on Saturday mornings instead of getting ready for netball. He said he was not against Facebook – “I think it’s great”, but it had its place.http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/7594087/Dad-finds-way-to-block-Facebooklast_img read more

Arsenal strike late to keep off wasteful West Ham

September 24, 2020

first_img But David Moyes’s men deserved something to show for their performance and felt hard done by with some decisions that went against them. After a relatively trouble free first weekend of the season for VAR reviews, the inconsistent application of what constitutes handball reared its head on Saturday. After Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof was penalised for handling inside the box during his side’s 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace, West Ham were not awarded a penalty for what seemed a much more obvious handball from Gabriel Magalhaes early on. Ceballos and Nketiah were involved in a spat during the warm-up at Craven Cottage last weekend, but showed they were back on the same wavelength as the Spanish midfielder unselfishly squared for the England under-21 international. FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail分享 That was the only clear opening the hosts created before half-time and West Ham levelled just before the break when Antonio outmuscled Rob Holding to turn home Ryan Fredericks’s inviting cross. Antonio was a constant menace to the Arsenal defence and came close twice more in the second period. Gabriel just did enough to take the sting out of his first effort for Bernd Leno to save on the line before Antonio powered a header back off the crossbar. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang committed his future to Arsenal earlier this week by signing a new three-year contract and the Gunners’ prolific goalscorer was the creator for the opening goal as he just managed to stay onside from Bukayo Saka’s pass before crossing for Lacazette to power a header home.center_img Antonio saw a second-half header come back off the bar, but Arsenal were ruthless with their chance to win the game as Dani Ceballos timed his run perfectly in behind the West Ham defence to square for Nketiah, who had the simple task of rolling into an empty net. After winning the FA Cup and Community Shield and starting their season with a flourish by winning 3-0 at Fulham on the opening weekend, Arsenal were expected to swot aside a West Ham team that were easily beaten by Newcastle a week ago. Loading… Eddie Nketiah came off the bench to score the winner as Arsenal overcame an underwhelming performance to beat West Ham 2-1 on Saturday night. The Gunners move level with Everton and Crystal Palace on maximum points at the top of the table after two games, but were far from the standards they have set under Mikel Arteta as the visitors enjoyed the majority of the chances after Michail Antonio cancelled out Alexandre Lacazette’s opener for the hosts.last_img read more

Maken’s interference in military promotions for sportspersons upsets army

November 28, 2019

first_imgThe Indian Army has been upset with Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Ajay Maken’s interference in military promotions for sportspersons without understanding its wider ramifications.Countering Maken, who has been seeking triple promotion for outstanding sportspersons like Subedar Vijay Kumar who won silver medal at the London Olympics, army sources questioned his logic asking whether an Olympic medal could be compared with a gallantry medal like Paramvir Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra or Shaurya Chakra awarded to soldiers in war or combating terror. The army would take up the matter with Defence Minister AK Antony, who has received a letter from Maken in this regard. Maken had on Tuesday wrote to Antony seeking the tweaking of rules to give outstanding military sportspersons a triple promotion, bringing them at par with promotion policy for civilian sportspersons.Army sources said the sports minister was playing to the gallery. They said there are laid down norms for rewards and emoluments for outstanding sportspersons and the sports minister should not attempt to play around with the promotion policy.last_img read more
