Evening with Greg LeMond kicks off cycling celebration
These victories, along with several others, brought him international recognition. LeMond has been named one of Sports Illustrated’s 40 most influential people in sports in the last 40 years and is a member of the Cycling Hall of Fame. Joining LeMond for the evening is Shimano, vice president of Shimano American Corp. The Shimano name is legendary in the cycling world for quality bike designs, equipment and cycling team sponsorships. LeMond and Shimano will share anecdotes about their paths to success, including the challenges, triumphs and experiences that have catapulted them to the top of the cycling world. “An Evening with Greg LeMond Special Guest Kozo Shimano” is the first in a series of events to complement the Stage Six Finish of the Tour of California, hosted by the city of Santa Clarita. Other events to take place on Feb. 24 include: Family Ride: 11 a.m. On Feb. 23, cycling fans can experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy an evening with an icon of the cycling world – Greg LeMond. The “An Evening with Greg LeMond Special Guest Kozo Shimano” gala dinner will be held at Robinson Ranch as the precursor to the Amgen Tour of California, which arrives in Santa Clarita on Feb. 24. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour at 6, followed by dinner, presentations on the cycling world and an opportunity to ask questions of Greg LeMond and Kozo Shimano. Tickets for the event are $100 per person. In 1986, LeMond became the first American to win the Tour de France. He went on to win again in 1989, and for a triumphant third time in 1990. The whole family can catch cycle fever and participate in a 3-mile beginners ride, 5-mile intermediate ride or 7-mile advanced ride. All levels will begin at Santa Clarita City Hall and finish at the actual finish for the Amgen Tour of California. The fee for the Family Ride is $12 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and younger. All entrants will receive an event-numbered bib, T-shirt, medal and raffle ticket. The Family Ride is sponsored locally by Healthnet. Kids Zone: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sponsored by the Westfield Valencia Town Center, the Kids Zone will offer activities for younger cycling fans. A tricycle obstacle, a human bowling alley and an inflatable rock climbing wall, slide and obstacle course will be featured. Lifestyle Festival Sponsored by Healthnet: 12:30-4:30 p.m. Cycling enthusiasts of all ages can immerse themselves in the world-class sporting event. The festival will feature a health and fitness expo, cancer awareness education, cycling gear, family activities, bike safety, food, entertainment and more.
