Ford Mustang, which is celebrating its 55th anniversary today, has also claimed the title of the world’s best-selling sports coupe for the fourth consecutive year on the back of the sales in 2018.The data regarding the global sales of Ford Mustang has been furnished by IHS Markit that provides critical information, analytics and solutions for the major industries and markets.Also, Ford sold 75,842 units of Mustang in 2018 in the United States of America, thereby becoming the best-selling sports car in the country.”We broke the mould when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago,” said Jim Farley, Ford President, Global Markets.”Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world,” Farley added.In 2018, Ford Mustang was available for purchase in 146 markets around the globe. According to Ford, over 5 lakh sixth-generation Mustangs have been sold worldwide since 2015. Last year, the sports coupe cornered 15.4 per cent of the segment share globally, adding an additional half point to its share. The rise in market share was partly fuelled by the new Mustang Bullitt. According to Ford, Mustang Bullitt exceeded global sales forecasts by 25 per cent.The India-spec 2016 Ford Mustang is available with a 5.0-litre, Ti-VCT, V8, petrol engine that delivers nearly 400 bhp and 515 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. There are four driving modes — Normal, Sport+, Track and Snow/Wet.
