first_imgKolkata: With just 35 days to go until the start of Bengal’s biggest festival, city residents thronged various malls and market places in large numbers on Sunday.In the last few weeks the spirit of shopping had been dampened due to rains in the city. Kolkata and its adjoining areas had received moderate to heavy spells of rain due to cyclonic circulation and also because of formation of low pressure trough over Bay of Bengal.As the weather remained sunny from Sunday morning, people decided to go for puja shopping. There was a large crowd in New Market area as well on Sunday afternoon. The food stalls in the area also had a good business.These places in the city will become favourite destinations for people in the next few weeks as Durga Puja comes closer. The shops, especially those selling garments and shoes, saw the highest footfall on Sunday. People wear new clothes and love to have good food during the Puja days in addition to pandal hopping. The city police have already taken measures to manage the extra rush of shoppers as Durga puja comes nearer.A garment shop owner on Camac Street said that they are ready with new stocks as the Durga puja is just a month away.”We have been eagerly waiting to go for puja shopping for the past few weeks. As it was a clear sunny day, we decided to go out for shopping on Sunday,” said Supratik Dutta, an MBA student and a resident of Jadavpur, who visited Gariahat for shopping on Sunday afternoon.last_img
