Sydney | Published: December 1 2016 2:34 pm Glenn Maxwell returned to the Australia side for the New Zealand ODIs (Source: File) Top News All-rounder Glenn Maxwell was disappointed not to get an Australia Test recall during the recent overhaul of the squad but wants to use the one-day series against New Zealand to press his claims for next February’s tour of India Australia awarded debuts to three batsmen for the third Test against South Africa at Adelaide Oval last month after losing the first two matches in the series on the back of a string of batting collapses Although the prodigiously gifted Maxwell is better known for his all-out attack in shorter formats he thought his recent performances had shown the sort of application that might have earned him another chance at Test level “I thought I might have been a chance” Maxwell told reporters on Thursday “The way I batted in my first game back at the MCG against the reverse-swinging ball against Queensland I thought that was a really good sign of the improvements I’ve made in my defence technique and the way I leave the ball “But the way the selections have gone I’m probably looking at the Indian series now I think I’ve probably missed the boat for the home summer” The 28-year-old who played the last of his three Tests in 2014 was dumped from the one-day squad for their tour of Sri Lanka having struggled to score any meaningful runs and said the time away from the national set-up had helped him refocus “I changed a few things slightly technically and slightly mentally as well more so the way I look at the game and the way I start my innings” Maxwell nicknamed “Big Show” said “I think that’s going to be a big change heading into this one-day series about starting my innings and making sure I get into the game and not sort of throw it away too early” Being back in the one-day squad was his first opportunity to show the selectors those changes to his game he added but he would be doing his best to make it as hard as possible to continue to leave him out of the Test side “Whether that comes from white ball cricket or any sort of cricket I’m playing whether they come down and watch me at Fitzroy-Doncaster and see how I’m going in club cricket it doesn’t matter” he said “I’m going to be trying to make as many runs and taking as many wickets and show them the improvements I have made” more or less wound up everything else and am doing films without any disturbance Also Aarakshan was an easier film to shootbut it is a better film than Raajneeti It has a more focussed story Did the Supreme Court ruling on reservation for OBCs in educational institutions add more substance to the scriptThe subject of Aarakshan is inherent to Indian society We live in a caste-based society where even education is affected by the caste system The SC ruling definitely forms a turning point in the film The divisions had been simmering even before the ruling The SC stamp is only a reality every section of society has to accept But it does not end here Everyday you hear more peoplelike the Gujjars and the Muslims demanding reservation It is rather human to take sides when it comes to issues like these Was it difficult keeping a neutral stanceWho am I to take sides This is just a way to let out the feelings that society has been suppressing for years The pain is on all sides I have tried to understand the reality of it Is it true that a Dalit group protested against Saif Ali Khana Nawab portraying a Dalits roleThey sent a letter to my Patna office It could have been just some mischief as there was no address on the envelope HenceI cannot even reply to them If they think a Nawab playing Dalit is discriminationthen somebody could raise their voice against a Dalit writing our Constitution Their fears are unfounded here When Aarakshan was being scriptedAjay Devgn was roped in to play the lead Have things changed between you two since thenAjay would have definitely been hearing on a plea filed by the father of a Kerala-based woman who converted to Islam before marrying a Muslim man that interaction with the woman be conducted in-camera A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud said that it will deal with this plea on 27 November itself when the woman would be brought before it for interaction The counsel for Ashokan KM the father of the woman sought an urgent hearing on his plea saying that it would become infructuous if the earlier order mandating open court interaction is not modified The apex court had on 30 October directed that the woman be produced before it on 27 November for an interaction in open court Asokan referred to the communally sensitive nature of the case and sought in-camera interaction on some grounds including that radical elements could jeopardise the safety and privacy of his daughter and the family File image of Hadiya Image courtesy: Firstpost Hindi The top court had on 16 August said it would speak to the woman in-camera before taking a final decision on the matter It has later modified the order saying "We may further add that this court shall speak to her not in camera but in open court" The apex court had earlier observed that the free consent of a major to marriage has to be ascertained amid an assertion by National Investigation Agency (NIA) that an indoctrinated person may be incapable of giving free consent to marriage The NIA had referred to "psychological kidnapping" and said that an indoctrinated person may be incapable of giving free consent It had also alleged that there was a "well-oiled machinery working in Kerala" indulging in indoctrination and radicalisation and 89 such cases have been reported The NIA had claimed that this was a case in which the woman was indoctrinated and hence the court could invoke parental authority even if she was a major The counsel for her father had earlier claimed that Shafin Jahan the alleged husband of the woman was a radicalised man and had links with persons who used to recruit for ISIS The woman a Hindu had converted to Islam and later married Jahan It was alleged that the woman was
